Slump, slide, bottom-out, bust, collapse, decline. There are many ways of saying it, but the American economy is on the verge of an official recession. Wiikipedia defines a recession as a decline in a country’s gross domestic product (GDP), or negative real economic growth, for two or more successive quarters of a year. One of the most dangerous words associated with recession is unemployment. As many Americans are facing layoffs and cutbacks, AMSOIL dealers are thriving nationwide.
A recession is a downward spiral, with each component affecting the next in one big snowballing problem. One of the main symptoms of a recession is a reduction in consumer spending. This results in a decrease in the production of goods, which results in a growth in unemployment, which results in reduced personal income, which results in a decrease in consumer spending, and so on. Eventually, the stock market also suffers, adding to the financial woes.
There are too many factors that contribute to the development of a recession to pin-point a single cause. It can be caused by over-production – a situation in which the supply of goods exceeds consumers’ ability to consume. Another major contributor is people’s confidence in the economy. People who aren’t confident in the security of their employment spend less. Manufacturers that believe consumer spending is declining produce less, leading to layoffs. Oftentimes, mere speculation that a recession is imminent is enough to spur a bad day for the stock market. And, each of these factors affects the others, resulting in the downward spiral into recession.
There is no cure-all end to a recession, but there are ways to improve the nation’s fiscal situation. First, in the
The government also will take steps to attempt to boost the economy through tax cuts, the creation of new government jobs and through the Federal Reserve System. These measures generally increase consumer spending, thereby increasing the employment rate, and the upward trend of economic recovery begins.
Consumer’s lack of confidence in the nation’s economy is contagious, and AMSOIL Dealers are not immune to the worry created by neighbors and the media. It’s never easy to watch friends and loved-ones go through periods of joblessness and uncertainty, but AMSOIL Dealers needn’t fear a recession. As other industries struggle, AMSOIL is flourishing. The economy has certainly had its ups and downs over the past 35 years, but AMSOIL and its dealers have demonstrated consistent growth. AMSOIL INC. has seen double-digit growth more years than not and current outlook couldn’t be better. AMSOIL dealers across the nation continue seeing increased profits, even during the recent economic downturn.
In a recession, AMSOIL dealers have many advantages. First, AMSOIL dealers work for themselves, so they don’t face layoffs. Next, AMSOIL products remain in demand, even during a recession. While consumers might cut back on miles traveled during a recession, they don’t stop traveling all together. Lastly, the AMSOIL dealer network is vast and continues to grow. That success speaks to the mass potential of the AMSOIL opportunity, and others looking for stability in a volatile economy my find security in their own AMSOIL business.
Off-road truck racing applications encounter high speeds, heavy loads, shock loading and centrifugal sling-off. Drag racing vehicles, including funny cars and dragsters with high 3,000 to 8,000 horsepower engines, launch so quickly from the starting line that the gear lube flows away from the front of the differential, starving the pinion gear and bearings of essential lubrication protection. Because rock crawling and rock racing vehicles must maneuver over rocks and obstacles with little ground clearance, racers often incorporate differentials designed with the pinion on top instead of the bottom, causing pinion gears and bearings to operate with little lubrication protection. In addition, rock crawling and rock racing vehicles often operate in precarious positions, including sideways and upside down, causing lubricants to flow away from gears and bearings and leaving them to operate with no lubrication at all.
AMSOIL Severe Gear Synthetic SAE 190and SAE 250 Gear Lubricants are premium grade, extreme pressure gear lubes engineered specifically for the demands of severe racing conditions. They are formulated with shear stable, heavy synthetic base oils for “high film strength” and extra heavy treatments of additives. Their synthetic formulations provide improved flow over conventional oils, reducing viscous drag and power loss. Severe Gear SAE190 and SAE 250 Gear Lubes provide a barrier cushion between metal surfaces that absorbs impact. AMSOIL proprietary extreme pressure additives form an iron-sulfide barrier coating on gear surfaces for the ultimate line of defense against wear, pitting and scoring.
PERFORMANCE – AMSOIL Severe Gear Synthetic SAE 190 and SAE 250 Gear Lubricants are specifically engineered for high horsepower, high torque conditions where centrifugal gear lube sling-off encountered. These tenacious formulations cling to gears and bearings for the best possible protection during shock loading, high G-forces and where pinion gears are installed at steep angles. Custom Severe Gear Synthetic Gear lubricants provide exceptional reliability and extended gear life.
APPLICATION AND SERVICE LIFE – AMSOIL Severe Gear Synthetic SAE 190 and SAE 250 Gear Lbbricants are excellent for severe differential applications, including off-road truck racing, rock racing, rock crawling, tractor pulling, funny car racing and dragster racing. Other severe duty applications include heavy duty trucks and equipment where increased lubricant film is necessary. These oils are recommended for use in hypoid gear differentials and other applications requiring a high viscosity, API GL-5 gear lube. Where limited slip performance is required, use AMSOIL Slip-Lock limited slip additive. Change Severe Gear SAE190 and SAE 250 Gear Lubes as conditions dictatge. Where extended drain intervals are desired, monitor by oil analysis.
PASSENGER VEHICLES - Just as race vehicles require special gear lube properties, modern vehicles are designed with more horsepower and torque than their predecessors, allowing greater hauling and towing capability, but leading to higher gear loading and hotter running differentials. In addition, increased interior space and lower floor boards push axles higher into the vehicle’s body, reducing air flow and increasing heat. The closer proximity of the axles to the exhaust system also effectively raises heat, while more aerodynamic body styles and air dams result in restricted airflow to the differentials.
Many motorists operate their vehicles under severe operating conditions, including snow plowing, hauling heavy loads and towing heavy trailers. These extremes place an increased level of stress on drivetrain components. As vehicle stress increases, transmission and differential temperatures rise and cause conventional lubricants to thin, causing inadequate lubrication that can lead to component failure. Modern gear oils are faced with the challenge of providing adequate wear protection during severe service operating conditions, while also providing maximum fuel efficiency.
SEVERE GEAR SYNTHETIC GEAR LUBES – AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 (SVG), 75W-110 (SVT) and 75W-140 (SVO) Synthetic Gear Lubes are specially formulated to provide superior protection, performance and fuel efficiency under severe operating conditions. They are excellent for vehicles subjected to towing, hauling, plowing, steep hill driving, commercial use, racing, off-road use, rapic acceleration, stop-and-go driving and high ambient temperatures.
Formulated with exclusive blends of high viscosity, shear stable synthetic base stocks and increased levels of premium quality additives, Severe Gear Synthetic Gear Lubes maintain viscosity for long-lasting protection against wear, pitting and scoring in both hot and cold temperature extremes and provide excellent limited slip and locking differential performance. Severe Gear effectively prevents thermal runaway, a phenomenon caused by lubricant’s inability to control friction and increased heat under high-stress conditions. By preventing thermal runaway, Severe Gear Synthetic Gear Lubes inhibit component damage and rapid lubricant degradation. Severe Gear provides extended drain intervals of 100,000 miles in normal service or 50,000 miles in severe service, or longer if specified by the owners manual. Check out AMSOIL Gear Lubes.
It only takes four percent water contamination to bring a DOT 3 fluid’s boiling point down to the federal limit.
Compressibility – When a fluid is non-compressible it means it won’t compress into a smaller volume when pressure is applied. In a brake system, fluid pressure is multiplied by the master cylinder and can reach more than 1,000 pounds per square inch(psi) in the lines. Like any other hydraulic fluid, brake fluid must be non-compressible at the expected pressures to transmit force from one end of the system to the other while simultaneously lubricating the pistons and rubber parts as they move through their bores. If the fluid were to compress, all braking power would be lost.
Brake Fluid Maintenance – Brake fluids fail either because they boil or because they cease to provide adequate lubrication and corrosion protection. Both reasons for failure are the result of contamination, usually by water or petroleum products.
DOT 3 and DOT 4 polyglycol ether-based brake fluids are hygroscopic, which means they absorb water easily and hold it in suspension, similar to antifreeze. In most climates, moisture seeps into the brake system continuously through the various seals and microscopic pores of the flexible brake lines. This seepage can accelerate as vehicle ages and there’s almost no limit to how much water the fluid can absorb. By the time brake fluid has been in the system for three years, it can easily reach its wet boiling point. Because this happens gradually, most drivers won’t discover the reduced braking ability until it’s too late.
Many owner’s manuals recommend changing brake fluid every 24 months to remove moisture. Approximately half of all cars and light trucks in the
AMSOIL Series 500 DOT 3 High-Performance and Series 600 DOT 4 Racing Brake Fluid maintain stable viscosities over a wide temperature range and flow easily at low temperatures. They provide good lubrication though-out the system and their superior additive packages can raise boiling points to more than 232°C (450°F). They keep water in suspension, slowing its effects on the brake system. AMSOIL Brake Fluids have high boiling temperatures, ensuring maximum life and reliable braking power, even in extreme conditions.
Extended drain intervals are a major selling point for AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, saving customers time, labor and money. The key to the ability of AMSOIL synthetic motor oils to provide extended drain intervals are top quality synthetic base stocks and premium additive packages that ensure they maintain their protective viscosities, neutralize acids and prevent the formation of harmful sludge and varnish deposits.
Still, however, even with vehicle manufacturers and a number of lubricant manufactures extending drain interval recommendations, some customers are stuck on 3,000 mile drains and have not yet embraced the concept of extended drain intervals. In addition, to the benefits of extended drain intervals, the superior formulations of AMSOIL synthetic motor oils provide many other benefits:
Extended Equipment Life – AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are formulated with top-of-the-line synthetic base stocks that provide excellent viscosity film strength for superior wear protection, while robust additive packages further reduce wear in metal-to-metal contact regions, extending equipment life and reducing major repairs.
Fuel Economy – AMSOIL synthetic motor oils have been shown to yield significant increases in fuel economy over conventional motor oils. Petroleum based lubricants are composed of irregular molecules of various sizes that create excess friction, in addition to the friction generated between moving parts. The vehicle’s engine must burn extra fuel to overcome this friction, decreasing fuel mileage. Conventional lubricants are also very susceptible to volatility, increasing viscosity and forcing the engine to consume more energy pumping oil at the expense of fuel economy.
Cold Temperature Protection – Conventional lubricants often contain paraffins (wax) that cause the lubricants to thicken and lose ability to flow in cold temperatures. Cold-thickened lubricants sometimes hinder the rotation of the vehicle’s crankshaft so much that it cannot rotate fast enough to start the engine. In addition, cold-thickened lubricants may leave working parts unprotected for as long as five minutes, causing significant wear.
High Temperature Protection – High temperature operation causes many conventional oils to volatilize and lose mass, seriously compromising their protective qualities. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils provide superior protection and performance in high temperatures, resisting volatilization, keeping oil consumption and emissions extremely low and ensuring thoroughly lubricated and protected.
Corrosion Protection – Corrosion inhibition is an especially important feature for engines subject to frequent short-trip operations and stored engines. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils contain anti-corrosion agents , preventing the formation of corrosion on critical engine components and extending equipment life.
AMSOIL synthetic motor oils offer many significant benefits, including extended equipment life and fewer repairs, improved fuel economy, superior protection in hot and cold temperature extremes and protection against corrosion. Even if a customer is not yet sold on the benefits of extended drain intervals, there are many more reasons to buy and use AMSOIL synthetic motor oils.
Typical drain intervals with General Motors’ Oil Life System, the onboard computer algorithm that tells drivers when it’s time to change their motor oil, are 8,500 miles, versus 5,000 for GM’s competitors, a GM executive told last week’s World Tribology Congress. Drain intervals over 30,000 miles are achievable with minor engine modifications and appropriate oil quality.
